In this class the first consideration of all will be, is it even worth it? Are so called “Kits” worth it. Covering Rifle and Pistol calibers, in both modern and black powder arms, the class will discuss velocity implications and limits, alloys vs pure lead and the uses of each. We will cover types of lubes, resizing (needed or no?) gas checks, mold selection and care, the casting process, multi cavity molds, as well as the value of a water quench. We will cover determining hardness and it’s strange impact on “leading.” We will discuss how to adjust hardness with alloys and some very basic metallurgy. Safety considerations and ventilation will be emphasized.
Students will be required to wear full length flannel shirts, and full length jeans with heavy shoes. Leather work gloves will also be required as well as eye protection. If you so choose, you may also wear a student supplied respirator during hands on casting operations
This class will be hands on. It will be held in a long established reloading environment. Space is limited as is class size (3 students max). All materials required for this course will be supplied. However, if the student so desires, they may bring personal molds. Students will be interviewed prior to class to help establish focus and areas of emphasis.
