Defensive Pistol Low Light / No Light: (Course Description)
Defensive Pistol Low Light / No Light is an advanced, proprietary program developed and delivered by CRMP TRAINING LLC, operating as Phase 3 Training, Inc. This course is designed for shooters seeking to master defensive pistol skills in challenging low-light and no-light environments. Please note, this course is not approved by the NRA and is intended solely for internal use; all materials are protected intellectual property and may not be reproduced or shared without written consent from Curtis Payne, owner of Phase 3 Training.
Administrative Procedures & Safety
Participants begin with a thorough check-in, staff introductions, and verification of pistol licenses. Safety is paramount: a tailored range safety briefing is provided, and strict protocols are enforced, including emergency contact procedures, mandatory eye and ear protection, and disciplined firearm handling. All equipment must meet course requirements, including a handgun with a light attachment, flashlight, holster, magazines, sturdy belt, and appropriate protective gear.
Training Philosophy
The course emphasizes real-world defensive training and problem-solving, focusing on combat-effective hits rather than competitive shooting. Key principles—reality, consistency, and efficiency—guide all instruction.
Skills & Techniques
Students review and practice fundamental pistol skills: grip, stance, sight alignment, sight picture, trigger and breath control, and follow-through. Advanced techniques include search and assess procedures, workspace management for reloads and clearing, and administrative/tactical reloads. The curriculum stresses deliberate practice and situational awareness at all times.
Specialized Drills
The heart of the course is a series of scenario-based drills designed to build competence and confidence in low light and no light conditions:
● Mozambique/Failure to Stop Drill: Engage single targets at 7 yards with torso and head shots, repeated to establish baseline skills and awareness of lighting challenges.
● Instinct or Point N’ Shoot: Develop instinctive engagement at 7 yards, focusing on rapid threat orientation without reliance on precise sighting.
● Box Drill: Engage multiple targets at 7-10 yards, practicing light discipline and instinctive pointing.
● Barrier Drills: Navigate and engage threats using cover, emphasizing concealment, light discipline, and rapid threat assessment.
● Doorway Room Clear: Aggressive clearing operations through doorways, simulating real-world defensive scenarios under time constraints.
● One Hand Engagement (“The Rambo”): Practice shooting with strong hand only while managing a flashlight for optimal light discipline.
● Hostage Harry: A high-stress, single-shot scenario requiring precision and discipline under extreme conditions.
Course Outcomes
Graduates of Phase 3 Training’s Defensive Pistol Low-Light / No-Light course will gain:
● Enhanced defensive shooting skills in adverse lighting
● Improved situational awareness and decision-making under stress
● Mastery of advanced reloads, malfunctions, and tactical movement
● Confidence in handling real-world defensive scenarios
