NRA Basic Personal Protection Outside The Home (Course Description)
The NRA Basics of Personal Protection Outside the Home Course is an intensive, instructor-led program designed for responsible, law abiding adults who wish to develop the knowledge, skills, and mindset necessary to safely and effectively carry and use a concealed handgun for personal defense in public settings. This course goes beyond basic marksmanship and emphasizes decision making, situational awareness, legal considerations, and defensive shooting techniques applicable to real world encounters outside the home.
Course Overview
This course prepares students to recognize and avoid potentially dangerous situations while reinforcing the safe, responsible, and lawful use of a concealed pistol for self defense. Through a combination of classroom instruction and extensive live fire range training, students will learn how to carry, store, and deploy a handgun with confidence, accuracy, and accountability.
Instruction focuses on developing the proper attitude, judgment, and discipline required for armed self defense in public environments. Students are challenged to think critically about personal safety, legal responsibilities, and the moral considerations involved in defensive firearm use.
Course Structure
The course is divided into two progressive levels, allowing students to build foundational skills before advancing to more complex defensive techniques.
Level One – Foundational Skills (Approx. 9 Hours)Level One introduces the essential principles of personal protection outside the home. Topics include:● Defensive mindset and situational awareness● Legal considerations for carrying and using a firearm outside the home● Methods of concealed carry and equipment selection● Drawing from concealment● Defensive shooting fundamentals● Use of cover and movement● Safe firearm handling under defensive conditions
Students will spend several hours on the range and fire approximately 100 rounds of ammunition during Level One. Upon successful completion, students may elect to continue to Level Two.
Level Two – Advanced Defensive Skills (Approx. 5+ Hours)Level Two is an optional advanced training segment that focuses heavily on live fire exercises. Instruction builds upon Level One skills and includes:● Advanced drawing and reloading techniques● Shooting while moving● Multiple target engagement● Defensive accuracy under stress● Problem solving scenarios
Students will fire approximately 115 rounds of ammunition during Level Two. Time and ammunition requirements are minimums and may be exceeded depending on student progress and training needs.
Prerequisites (Additional Details)
Participants must:● Be an adult legally eligible to possess a firearm under federal, state, and local laws● Be of good repute and responsible character● Have completed the NRA Basics of Personal Protection In the Home Course, or● Successfully pass a pre course evaluation demonstrating equivalent knowledge and skills
Students must already understand:● Basic firearm safety rules● Fundamental pistol operation● Core legal principles related to self defense

Each student will receive:● NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection Outside the Home Handbook● NRA Gun Safety Rules Brochure● Appropriate NRA Course Completion Certificate(s) for Level One and/or Level Two
