  • The NRA Chief Range Safety Officer (Chief RSO) designation represents an advanced level of training and leadership within the NRA Range Safety Officer program. This certification is designed for experienced, NRA-certified Range Safety Officers who are seeking to take on greater responsibility in the supervision, management, and instruction of range safety operations.
Certified RSOs who wish to become a Chief RSO must successfully complete a specialized course conducted by an NRA Training Counselor who also holds the Chief Range Safety Officer certification. The course consists of 14 hours of instruction and is delivered in two structured components: Basic Instructor Training and NRA Chief Range Safety Officer training.
The training curriculum emphasizes both administrative oversight and instructional competence. Course sessions cover essential topics including standard operating procedures, range inspections, emergency procedures, firearm stoppages and malfunctions, and the delivery of effective safety briefings. These areas are critical to ensuring safe, organized, and compliant range operations.
In addition to classroom instruction, candidates are required to demonstrate organizational leadership and teaching skills through active participation in practical exercises. These exercises are designed to evaluate the candidate’s ability to manage range activities, communicate safety requirements clearly, and instruct others in accordance with NRA standards.
To complete the certification process, students must also pass an open-book examination, which assesses their understanding of course material and application of range safety principles. Upon successful completion of all course requirements, the participant’s certification status is upgraded from Range Safety Officer to NRA Chief Range Safety Officer.
The Chief RSO certification signifies a higher level of authority, expertise, and instructional capability, preparing certified individuals to support advanced range operations and contribute to the training and oversight of other Range Safety Officers.
