NRA Instructor Pistol Shooting (Course Description)
The NRA Instructor Pistol Shooting Course is a comprehensive 16-hour instructor development program designed to prepare qualified individuals to effectively organize, promote, and teach the NRA’s Basic Pistol Shooting course. This course focuses on developing the knowledge, skills, and professional attitude required to deliver safe, consistent, and high-quality firearms instruction in accordance with NRA standards.
Course Purpose and Scope
This instructor-level course emphasizes both instructional methodology and discipline-specific content related to pistol shooting. Candidates learn how to present course material clearly, manage a classroom environment, and conduct practical training exercises while reinforcing safe firearm handling practices. The program is structured to ensure that instructor candidates are not only knowledgeable shooters, but also effective communicators and organized course leaders.
Prerequisites
Possession of basic firearm safety and shooting skills is required prior to certification as an NRA instructor. Before attending the instructor training, candidates must complete a pre-course questionnaire and demonstrate their firearm background through pre-course assessment exercises. These prerequisites help confirm that each candidate has the foundational experience necessary to successfully participate in instructor-level training.
Course Structure
The course is presented in two primary components:
1. Basic Instructor Training – This portion introduces core instructional principles, teaching strategies, and organizational skills essential for conducting NRA training courses.
2.Discipline-Specific Instructor Training (Pistol) – This segment focuses on the specific content, concepts, and instructional considerations associated with teaching pistol shooting courses.
Throughout both components, instructor candidates actively participate in practical exercises designed to develop and demonstrate effective teaching, presentation, and organizational skills. These hands-on activities allow candidates to apply instructional concepts in realistic training scenarios.
Evaluation and Certification
As part of the course requirements, candidates must successfully complete an instructor certification examination. This evaluation measures understanding of course content, instructional responsibilities, and overall readiness to teach the NRA Basic Pistol Shooting course in accordance with established standards.
Course Materials
Each student receives essential instructional resources to support both the course and future teaching efforts, including:
● NRA Trainer’s Guide● NRA Pistol Shooting Instructor Candidate Packet● NRA Basic Pistol Shooting course student packet
These materials serve as reference tools for lesson planning, course organization, and instructional delivery during and after certification.
