Course Overview
This curriculum is designed for shooters who have mastered basic pistol skills and are seeking to advance their defensive shooting abilities in real-world scenarios. The course emphasizes practical training, problem-solving, and the development of combat-effective marksmanship, rather than competitive or sport shooting. Students will engage in a variety of live-fire drills and exercises that simulate defensive encounters, focusing on reality, consistency, and efficiency.
Administrative Procedures & Safety
● Check-in and Staff Introductions: The course begins with a welcome, administrative check-in, staff introductions, and verification of pistol licenses.● Range Safety Briefing: A tailored safety briefing is provided, covering range-specific protocols and emergency procedures.● Mandatory Safety Practices: Eye and ear protection are required at all times. Students must provide emergency contact information and adhere to strict firearm handling rules, including loading only on command and keeping firearms holstered and unloaded except when on the firing line.
Training Philosophy
● Real-World Focus: The curriculum distinguishes between bullseye and defensive shooting, prioritizing combat-effective hits and real-world application.● Problem-Solving: Students are encouraged to develop adaptive problem-solving skills under stress.● Skill Development: Emphasis is placed on mastering fundamentals such as grip, stance, sight alignment, trigger control, breath control, and follow-through. Students are taught to search and assess their environment after engaging targets.
Key Techniques and Procedures
● Workspace Technique: All reloads, handling, and clearing are performed in the “workspace” just below eye level to maintain situational awareness.● Reloads and Checks: Students practice administrative and tactical reloads, press checks, in-battery checks, and proper magazine positioning.● Live Fire Fundamentals: Initial drills focus on accuracy, groupings, and fundamentals at 7 yards, with ongoing evaluation and feedback.
Core Drills and Exercises
The curriculum includes a progression of live-fire drills designed to build advanced defensive skills:● 5-5-5 Drill: Shooters fire five rounds each with two hands, strong hand, and support hand at 10 yards, reinforcing one-handed shooting and reloads.● Kneeling Drill: Students practice engaging targets from kneeling positions, emphasizing movement, cover, and assessment.● Barricade Work: Drills focus on shooting from behind cover, understanding the difference between cover and concealment, and engaging targets from various positions.● X-Drill: Multiple target engagement in an “X” pattern, teaching shooters to adjust cadence based on target size and distance.● 1-4 Drill: Engaging multiple targets with increasing round counts to reinforce the need for multiple hits in defensive scenarios.● Mozambique Drill: Classic chest-head engagement with magazine changes, reinforcing speed, accuracy, and tactical reloads.● Turning and Movement Drills: Students practice engaging targets while turning left and right, moving forward, backward, and laterally, and shooting from supine positions to simulate real-life defensive situations.● Advanced Barricade and Movement Drills: Including left-to-right/right-to-left barricade work, diamond formation movement, zig-zag drills, and the Highsmith Drill, which challenges shooters with strong/support side transitions, kneeling, and lateral movement.
