  • The NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting course is a comprehensive, instructor-led training program designed for individuals of all experience levels, including those with no prior firearms background. The course emphasizes safety, knowledge, and responsible pistol handling through a combination of classroom instruction and supervised range activities. Instruction is delivered exclusively by an NRA Certified Instructor, ensuring nationally recognized standards and consistency throughout the course.

  • This course is conducted in a traditional classroom and shooting range environment and may be completed in a single-day format, depending on scheduling and range availability. The instructor-led structure allows students to receive direct guidance, demonstrations, and feedback from beginning to end, reinforcing safe and correct practices at every stage of learning.

  • Gun Safety RulesA foundational component of the course is a thorough review of essential gun safety rules. Students learn how to safely handle, transport, and store pistols, as well as how to maintain situational awareness on and off the range. Emphasis is placed on preventing negligent discharges and ensuring personal and public safety at all times.
    Proper Operation of Revolvers and Semi-Automatic PistolsThe course explains the mechanical differences between revolvers and semi-automatic pistols. Students are taught how each type functions, including basic controls, loading and unloading concepts, and safe handling characteristics unique to each platform. This knowledge helps students make informed decisions and handle pistols responsibly.
    Ammunition Knowledge and SelectionStudents receive instruction on ammunition components, types, and calibers. The course explains how to select appropriate ammunition for specific pistols and emphasizes the importance of using the correct ammunition to ensure reliability, performance, and safety.
    Pistol Selection and StorageThis section covers considerations for selecting a pistol based on intended use, ergonomics, and safety features. Students also learn best practices for safe pistol storage, including securing firearms to prevent unauthorized access and maintaining compliance with safety responsibilities.
    Shooting FundamentalsThe course introduces fundamental shooting principles that support accuracy and consistency. These fundamentals are presented conceptually and reinforced during range activities under instructor supervision, helping students build confidence and proper habits.
    Pistol Inspection and MaintenanceStudents are taught the importance of routine pistol inspection and basic maintenance. Instruction focuses on recognizing safe operating conditions, identifying common issues, and maintaining pistols in a serviceable and reliable state.
    MarksmanshipMarksmanship instruction emphasizes consistency, control, and safe shooting practices. Students learn how marksmanship principles contribute to accuracy and responsible shooting, reinforcing the importance of discipline and technique.
    Shooting Range SafetyRange safety procedures are thoroughly reviewed before live fire begins. Students learn range commands, etiquette, and safety expectations to ensure a controlled and secure shooting environment for all participants.

  • In addition to classroom instruction, students participate in live fire training conducted on a shooting range under the direct supervision of an NRA Certified Instructor. During this phase, students apply learned concepts in a controlled environment and complete a nationally standardized shooting qualification designed to assess safe handling and fundamental proficiency.

  • Each student receives the NRA Guide: Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, which serves as a reference throughout the course and beyond. Students are also required to complete a Basics of Pistol Shooting Student Examination to demonstrate understanding of the course material. Upon successful completion, students are awarded a course completion certificate bearing the signature of the NRA Secretary and the NRA Certified Instructor, recognizing achievement and compliance with NRA training standards.
