  • The NRA Instructor Rifle Shooting Course is a comprehensive 16-hour instructor development program designed to prepare qualified individuals to organize, promote, and teach the NRA Basic Rifle Shooting Course. This course focuses on developing not only technical knowledge, but also the instructional skills and professional attitude required of an NRA-certified instructor.

  • This course equips instructor candidates with the tools necessary to deliver safe, effective, and engaging rifle instruction in accordance with NRA standards. Emphasis is placed on instructional methodology, course organization, safety oversight, and effective communication in both classroom and range environments. Participants are trained to confidently present course material while maintaining the highest standards of firearm safety and responsibility.

  • To ensure a successful learning experience, candidates must already possess basic firearm safety and rifle shooting skills prior to enrollment. As part of the admission process, participants complete a pre-course questionnaire and demonstrate their existing firearm knowledge and experience through pre-course assessment exercises. These prerequisites help confirm that candidates are prepared to focus on instructional development rather than introductory shooting fundamentals.

  • The NRA Instructor Rifle Shooting Course is presented in two distinct parts:
    1. Basic Instructor Training (BIT):
This foundational component covers essential teaching principles, learning styles, lesson planning, student engagement, and effective use of training materials. Candidates learn how to manage a class, conduct safe and organized instruction, and represent the NRA in a professional manner.

    2. Discipline-Specific Instructor Training – Rifle:
This portion focuses on applying instructor training principles specifically to the NRA Basic Rifle Shooting curriculum. Candidates practice presenting course content, managing live-fire activities, and reinforcing safe firearm handling through structured exercises.

Throughout the course, students actively participate in practical teaching and organizational exercises designed to build confidence and instructional competence.

  • Instructor candidates are evaluated through their participation in practical exercises and must successfully complete an instructor certification examination. These assessments ensure that graduates meet NRA standards for knowledge, professionalism, and instructional ability prior to certification.

  • Each participant receives official NRA instructional resources, including:
    ● NRA Trainer’s Guide● NRA Rifle Shooting Instructor Candidate Packet● NRA Basic Rifle Shooting Course Student Packet
These materials support both the instructor training process and future course delivery.

  • Upon successful completion, graduates are prepared to deliver the NRA Basic Rifle Shooting Course with confidence, professionalism, and a strong commitment to safety, education, and responsible firearm use.
